Luxury Motor Home
Newell Coach Directory, Custom Luxury Motor Coaches and Preowned Coaches Not many people today realize that two of the most popular recent trends in the motorhome industry, the rear engine motorhome and diesel power for motorhomes, were both introduced by the late L.K. Newell in the early 1970's, a decade before gaining common acceptance for luxury motorhomes. (L.K.Newell shown above with his wife Opal, December 1990.) Mr. Newell built the first rear engine version of the Newell coach in 1969 using a Madson gas powered bus chassis. However, Newell was not satisfied with the compromises required by using a purchased chassis, so in 1970 he designed and built his own built-from-scratch pusher motorhome chassis. Always the innovator, Newell included a unique bridge construction technique that eliminated the frame rails between the front and rear axles, maximizing under floor storage space - the first basement motorhome! Newell was offering his first diesel powered motorhomes in 1972, far ahead of the rest of the industry. While pusher engines, diesel power, and basement storage are taken for granted in today's motorhome world, such was certainly not the case over two decades ago when Newell was running his motor coach manufacturing company. Mr. Newell had entered the motorhome business quite by accident. In 1967, Newell traveled from his Oklahoma home to El Monte, California to take delivery of a new Streamline motorhome. Manufactured by a division of the Streamline Trailer company, the then top-of-the-line Streamline luxury motorhome featured an aluminum body similar to the firm's trailers, and was mounted on a very conventional one-ton Ford gas powered chassis. Within two weeks of taking possession of his new Streamline, Mr. Newell returned to the factory to have a few corrections performed. (Left: 1966 Streamline motorhome, predecessor of the Newell Coach, featured a ford chassis and gas front engine.) Always a very outspoken person, Newell shared some of his suggestions for product improvements with the owner of Streamline. He was met with a legendary challenge: "If you're so damned smart, why don't you buy the motorhome operation from me?" Within hours, a deal was struck, and L.K. Newell was in the motor coach manufacturing business. Ironically, while the remaining portions of Streamline did not survive the turbulent RV market of the 1970's, the motorhome division that Streamline sold to L.K. Newell in 1967 has been in continuous and successful operation ever since as Newell Coach Corporation. Mr. Newell operated his coach manufacturing business in Miami, OK until ill health, believed at the time to be terminal, caused him to sell the company in 1973. During this relatively short time span of six years, Mr. Newell had established many of the basic elements that resulted in over 25 years of business success for the company he founded. Central to L.K. Newell's approach to the motorhome business was his desire to build the entire coach from the ground up. He was not satisfied with the conventional, off-the-shelf Class A motorhome chassis offered, and immediately demonstrated the genius to create a much more advanced chassis than was available: Mr. Newell also preferred his own chassis and body over converting a bus shell. Newell believed he could include the desirable features of a bus, such as the rear diesel engine, under floor storage, air brakes, and air suspension, and add features that buses did not offer, such as front mounted generator, mid entry door, motorhome systems built into the body and chassis during manufacture, and more flexibility to custom build to the client's preferences. Mr. Newell's philosophy remains the cornerstone of Newell Coach Corporation to this day. Fleetwood RV Download LibraryFleetwood RV Brochure Download Library Welcome! PKF Consulting, an internationally recognized consulting firm with expertise in travel and tourism, found that "typical RV family vacations are on average 26 to 74 percent less expensive than other types of vacations studied." Even factoring in RV ownership and fuel costs, the study reveals that RV vacations are more economical than those taken by personal car, commercial airline or cruise ship. "Regardless of gas prices, RV owners still get a bigger bang for their buck when compared to other types of vacations," says Richard Coon, president, Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA). "Affordability is a key reason why RV travel appeals so much to families." PKF analyzed major costs that would be incurred by families taking nine different types of vacations to such popular travel destinations as the Grand Canyon; Orlando, Fla.; Cape Cod; Napa, Calif.; and Alaska. PKF selected three types of RVs typically used by families for vacation purposesa folding camping trailer, conventional travel trailer and Type C motorhome. "In all cases, RV trips were more economical than other vacations analyzed, regardless of trip duration, distance or region of the country," says Kannan Sankaran, PKF's lead researcher for the study. "Even when fuel prices rise, our data show that each RV vacation would still be significantly less expensive," Sankaran explained. "While fuel costs are a component of the overall vacation cost, fluctuations in fuel prices aren't significant enough to affect a family's decision of whether or not to take RV trips over other types of vacations." According to the study, fuel prices would need to triple to make RVing more expensive for a family of four than other forms of travel. Vacations using a personal car, staying in hotels and eating in restaurantsthe least expensive of the non-RV travel optionswere found to be 36 percent more costly on average than going by RV. The study showed, for example, that a family of four traveling from Washington, D.C. to Dennis Port, Mass. for 10 days with their folding camping trailer in tow, staying in campgrounds for the local average of $25 per night, would save 54 percent, or $1,696, over the same trip taken by car, staying in hotels averaging $120 per night and eating in restaurants. Taking the same vacation by motorhome would save $974, or 34 percent, over going by car. On a trip from Atlanta to Orlando for a week, a family of four would save $1,658, or 53 percent, by traveling in their motorhome and staying in campgrounds averaging $27 per night, rather than flying, renting a car, staying in hotels averaging $125 per night and eating in restaurants. A week-long family vacation towing a conventional travel trailer from Salt Lake City, Utah to the Grand Canyon compared to the cost of taking the same trip by airline, renting a car and staying in a rental property would be $2,820 or 70 percent less expensive. Shorter getaways were also found to be more economical by RV. For example, a family taking a three-day vacation from Pittsburgh, Pa. to Lancaster, Pa. would save $271or 31 percentby towing a conventional travel trailer, rather than going by car, staying in hotels and eating in restaurants. The savings would be even greater$1,049 or 62.2 percentfor families taking the same trip by motorhome rather than flying. According to PKF, renting an RV is the most affordable way to tour Alaska. The study shows that 14-day RV rentals were less than half the cost of Alaskan all-inclusive cruises, including roundtrip air fare, and 69 percent less expensive than trips involving air fares, car rentals, hotels and restaurants. In addition to major expenditures required from the start to finish of each vacation, PKF factored in an estimated cost of ownership of the RVs analyzed. Research included documenting average ownership periods, residual values, annual days of use, insurance and applicable IRS interest deductions for second-home mortgages. "RV travel offers great value and affordability," says Coon, "but there are other key reasons to travel by RV, too. RVs are a comfortable, convenient, stress-free way to travel, enjoy the great outdoors and spend quality time with family." The PKF study considered only quantifiable economic factors, not the comparative quality of each vacation. As a result, the convenience, flexibility and quality family time cited as major benefits of traveling in an RV could not be addressed. Is the RV Safe and Reliable? About the web site links on this page Whether you buy new or used, the key to smart RV buying is knowing the quality and condition of the specific RV you want to buy. We've got lots of good tips and sites here for you. Check out reviews on the RV models you like. The following are just a few of the many websites that offer RV reviews. There are a number of sites with owner's reviews, which are generally freer to offer a full range of pros and cons than some magazine reviews. In addition to using the following sites, you can also enter the name of the model you like into your search engine followed by "RV review" to search for reviews of that specific model. Owner Reviews RV America Owner's Reviews allows you to browse or search reviews. Owners may provide a very detailed review as well as ratings for product, dealer, and manufacturer. MotorhomeReviewOnline.com Reviews are accessed by scrolling through them. Results from owner surveys are provided numerically. You can request specific info on a motorhome. If you currently own an RV, you may complete a 25-question survey about your motorhome and complete a review of it. The RVClub has owner-written RV reviews by RVClub members. You don't have to be a member to read the reviews. Reviews rate the RV from 1 (worst) to 5 (best). The database may be searched by any of the following criteria: rating, model year, manufacturer, model, and RV type. Reviewers indicate how long they've owned the RV, whether they purchased it new or used, good points, bad points, and any other comments. RV Magazines These magazines offer reviews. In general only a few reviews are posted on their websites. MotorHome RV Gazette RV Life Trailer Life Family Motor Coaching is the magazine of the Family Motor Coach Association Critical steps for checking out an RV, if you are buying used RVs go from very simple to very, very complex. Some of the ultra top-end RVs nearly require a full-time mechanic to service their very complex systems. Mechanical problems, whatever the unit, multiply if you're buying used, and many problems aren't readily visible to even the most sophisticated auto mechanic. That's why StreetWise recommends that you always follow these steps when buying a used RV. Critical Tip! Don't buy an RV without talking to the previous owner! (If you are looking at a used RV at a dealership and they won't or can't give you the name of the previous owner, look for an RV for which this information is available.) Ask the previous owner: Where or from whom did you buy the RV? Why are you selling the RV? Who was your RV mechanic and how do I call that person? Did you keep maintenance records, and can I see them? Did you ever have any insurance claims on this rig? How long has the RV been for sale? (RV owners are much more likely to negotiate if their RV has been on the market for a long time.) Critical Tip! Don't buy any RV without taking it for an extensive "test drive." Even if you're not yet an RVer and are very uncomfortable at the wheel or uncomfortable towing, you must do this. RVs are like cars in many ways: you'll feel comfortable in some of them and very uncomfortable in others. If you're really too uncomfortable to do the driving why not bring along an experienced RVer to help you evaluate the RV? A friend or a member of a RV club would do this just to help you. Or, you can retain a mechanic to be the driver (not a bad idea, particularly if you are spending a lot of money on a RV.) Critical tip! Don't buy a used RV without having it checked out by an experienced mechanic. If you're buying an expensive motorized rig, this advice is doubly important. You can generally find qualified mechanics by talking with large, licensed RV dealers. If you're doubly careful, don't use a mechanic who works for the selling dealer. Hire a mechanic from another dealership. Having a mechanic thoroughly check the RV may cost you $100-300, depending upon the size and complexity of the rig, but this money is the best money you can spend. What are the key questions to ask a qualified mechanic? First, tell the mechanic about your conversation with the previous owner. Then ask the mechanic: How much will it cost me to put this entire rig in good running order? How many useful hours do the drivetrain and other major mechanical elements have before I need to either replace or rebuild them? Structurally, what is the condition of the frame? Checking out the general dependability of all RVs Generally speaking in the RV world, you get what you pay for. Some RVs are famous for durability; others are noted for their flimsiness. Among the best sources for dependability information are current owners of the RV you're considering. In addition to the RV owner review sites above, here are additional RV chat rooms, forums and rating services. Many chat rooms and forums, incidentally, allow you to post your own questions and concerns even before you buy an RV. There are also some good inspection checklists that will help you evaluate a rig yourself. If it doesn't pass your inspection, you may wish to cross it off your list before paying for a mechanic to check it out. We also give you a way to check to see if the RV is affected by any recalls. Chat Rooms and Forums The Open Roads Forum Forums/Bulletin Board/Chat Room list from rvNetLinx iRV2.com Forums A tip: The RV Consumer Group does an excellent job of rating RVs by highway safety, reliability, and value. The group's site has no advertising, which insures its independence. They charge about $100 for a one-year membership to RV reviews. If you are thinking of major RV purchase, we strongly recommend this service. RV Clubs A tip: virtually all RVs have "clubs" associated with them. Visit a major RV club event, and you may be able to find owners of RVs that interest you. Here's a link to help you find club events. RV Owners Clubs from rvNetLinx. You can also find clubs by entering the make of the RV and the words "club" and "association" in your favorite search engine. Inspection Checklists An RV Inspection Checklist form is included in the RV Consumer Group's basic membership. RV Safety's basic checklist focuses on getting ready to travel but can also be used in a pre-purchase evaluation. RV Inspection Checklist from the RVClub's RVing 101. Recalls Check out recalls for your RV by searching the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration Recall Database. You can also search complaints, defect investigations, and service bulletins.
