Your camper is a comfortable and reliable Volkswagen-based unit (factory built) with a 2500cc diesel engine (California) or a Ford-based unit (factory built) with a 2000cc turbo diesel engine (Nugget). The camper handles well and is compact and easily parked. Inside is everything necessary to accomodate a party of up to 4 adults. It is a small car to drive but big enough to live in. A bench seat converts into one double bed, another double bed is in the pop up roof, which you raise at night. A motorhome of approximately 19ft in length. 5.50 Metres Long, 2.10 Metres Wide, 2.95 Metres High. Bed sizes are 2.00 x 1.35 metres and 2.00 x 1.45 metres. The vehicles have shower and toilet and sleep either 5 to 6 persons. FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Westfalia Camper Van is an Alternative to Hotels and Big RVs I've always liked the idea of having a house on wheels while on vacation. I like the idea of stopping wherever I want, cooking my own meals and not having to unpack in a half dozen hotels on a week long trip. However, I didn't want to drive and park something the size of school bus. I recently discovered the perfect solution: renting a Volkswagen Westfalia camper van. The Westfalia camper van is about the size of a standard mini-van, easy to park and drive. It is also a camper, with stove, sink and refrigerator, and, thanks to its easy-to-pop-up top, it has two double beds. We enjoyed the convenience of the camper van, especially when we parked at a scenic spot, lifted the top, and enjoyed a meal with a view at our own private table. At night, we cooked dinner on our gas stove, ate at an insect-free table for two, and slept soundly on a comfortable bed. In the morning, we made coffee without stepping outside. When it was time to park, the camper van slid into a standard parking place with no fuss. For two people camping in Yosemite, the Westfalia camper van's rental cost was comparable to lower-priced hotels in the park, and it was available with much less advance notice (and almost half of Yosemite's camping sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis). In other locations, an inexpensive hotel or motel may be less expensive than the camper van, but consider the cost of meals as well as convenience before making a decision. If you decide to rent a camper van, here are few tips to help make your experience more comfortable: Be sure you know exactly what will be provided in the camper van. Ask about what's in the kitchen kit, and rent sheets and towels if you need them. The Westfalia camper van does not have electrical connections, but they do have interior lights that operate from the auxiliary battery. When you check the camper van out, it looks simple when someone else shows it to you, but it becomes complex when you have to do it yourself. Make notes, and do everything yourself. Otherwise, you'll spend the first three days of your trip wondering exactly how you were supposed to start the refrigerator, or how to turn off the heater. If you want to cook meals in the camper van, plan them in advance, and make a grocery list. You may want to bring a few staples from home, such as salt, sugar and cooking oil. Unless you are planning on traveling a very short distance, opt for unlimited miles. The small difference in daily rate pays for your peace of mind. The step in and out of the camper van is a little high, and you have to get over the wheel well. If anyone in your party has mobility problems, discuss them before you rent. I rented the Westfalia camper van from California Campers in Redwood City (south of the San Francisco Airport). They also have an office in Los Angeles. RV Travel with a Purpose… RV Care-A-Vanners -- Habitat for Humanity Int'l 1 RV Travel with a Purpose… RV Care-A-Vanners RV travel just got better! Habitat for Humanity International’s RV Care-A-Vanner program offers anyone who travels in a recreational vehicle the opportunity to make a difference — and have fun while doing it — by helping build houses with families in need. The RV Care-A-Vanner program welcomes people of all ages and from all walks of life who are ready to pick up a hammer and help change lives. No Experience Necessary Every RV Care-A-Vanner building project is a unique and rewarding experience. Previous RV Care-A-Vanner teams have participated in house construction, roofing, interior and finish work, renovations and disaster relief. Those who prefer to be non-builders volunteer in the affiliate office or as “go fors” around the build site. There are ample opportunities to learn and plenty of meaningful work for everyone — no experience necessary. RV Care-A-Vanner builds normally involve eight to 20 RVing volunteers and last two weeks, with ten six- to seven-hour workdays. A typical day begins with devotions and includes morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. Volunteers bring sturdy work shoes and gloves, and their personal hand tools -- tool belt, hammer, square, pencil, measuring tape. The affiliate provides everything else including power tools, ladders, building materials, instruction and supervision. A volunteer leader handles the organization and administration of the team. Team members pay their own expenses, which may be tax deductible, and the host affiliate arranges for RV parking — usually free or at a nominal charge. Teams can expect at least minimal electric hookups, access to water and a dump station nearby. Hosting affiliates often also provide lunches and a welcome gathering. Due to safety and hygiene issues, pets are not permitted on the work site. Aside from the opportunity to use existing construction skills and learn new ones, RV Care-A-Vanner teams experience God’s love in action firsthand. Lasting friendships develop as the group parks together, builds together, eats together and socializes. In addition, the team often has the opportunity to work alongside local volunteers and future homeowners — a truly unforgettable experience. Many team members partner with Habitat affiliates around the country to promote awareness of poverty housing and homelessness by speaking to churches, civic groups and local media. RV Travel with a Purpose… RV Care-A-Vanners -- Habitat for Humanity Int'l 1 RV Travel with a Purpose… RV Care-A-Vanners RV travel just got better! Habitat for Humanity International’s RV Care-A-Vanner program offers anyone who travels in a recreational vehicle the opportunity to make a difference — and have fun while doing it — by helping build houses with families in need. The RV Care-A-Vanner program welcomes people of all ages and from all walks of life who are ready to pick up a hammer and help change lives. No Experience Necessary Every RV Care-A-Vanner building project is a unique and rewarding experience. Previous RV Care-A-Vanner teams have participated in house construction, roofing, interior and finish work, renovations and disaster relief. Those who prefer to be non-builders volunteer in the affiliate office or as “go fors” around the build site. There are ample opportunities to learn and plenty of meaningful work for everyone — no experience necessary. RV Care-A-Vanner builds normally involve eight to 20 RVing volunteers and last two weeks, with ten six- to seven-hour workdays. A typical day begins with devotions and includes morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. Volunteers bring sturdy work shoes and gloves, and their personal hand tools -- tool belt, hammer, square, pencil, measuring tape. The affiliate provides everything else including power tools, ladders, building materials, instruction and supervision. A volunteer leader handles the organization and administration of the team. Team members pay their own expenses, which may be tax deductible, and the host affiliate arranges for RV parking — usually free or at a nominal charge. Teams can expect at least minimal electric hookups, access to water and a dump station nearby. Hosting affiliates often also provide lunches and a welcome gathering. Due to safety and hygiene issues, pets are not permitted on the work site. Aside from the opportunity to use existing construction skills and learn new ones, RV Care-A-Vanner teams experience God’s love in action firsthand. Lasting friendships develop as the group parks together, builds together, eats together and socializes. In addition, the team often has the opportunity to work alongside local volunteers and future homeowners — a truly unforgettable experience. Many team members partner with Habitat affiliates around the country to promote awareness of poverty housing and homelessness by speaking to churches, civic groups and local media. Individual Care-A-Vanners often make financial contributions to the host affiliate and houses built by RV groups are sometimes funded through fund raising and donations from the members. RV Care-A-Vanners are encouraged to help defray the cost of the program by donating on line.
