This checklist provides you with peace of mind and could alert you to any trouble as you get ready to head down the highway: Check engine oil — level should be between the "add" and "full" marks. If it’s low, add a quart, but don’t overfill. If oil appears to be dark or opaque, it’s probably time for an oil change. Check coolant — coolant keeps your car from overheating. Make sure that the level is between "high" and "low." Remember that the cooling system operates best when the coolant is a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze. Check belts and hoses — look for cracks and signs of wear, especially on the fan belt. Check the coolant hoses for leakage and cracks. Replace if they appear to be worn. Check tires — make sure there are no cuts or bulges and that the tires still have good tread. Check the pressure with a pressure gauge and add air if needed (maximum amount of pressure is noted on the outside of the tire). Also, don’t forget to check your spare tire, just in case. Check lights — turn on all your lights and walk around your car to make sure that all lights are functioning properly. Also, ask someone to stand behind your car while you test your brake lights. Just to be on the safe side, you should also include an emergency kit in your car comprising of a quart of oil, a gallon of water, some basic tools, jumper cables, gloves, a flashlight with spare batteries, duct tape, a first aid kit, flares, and the most important tool of all...your cell phone. The promise of generating traffic into an installers' garage stems from the new freedom hitches that are so light, that a single person of average strength can easily swap hitches (from fifth wheel trailer hitch to gooseneck), or remove the trailer hitch entirely. "Rather than the bulky traditional fifth-wheel, this frees up the truckbed and can easily be changed by your wife or grandmother." Putnam Hitch Products ( www.putnamhitch.com ), a national trailer hitch manufacturer based in Bronson, Mich., offers a freedom hitch unlike any other because it mounts the fifth wheel gear upside down from the trailer pin box. All that's left in the truckbed is a lightweight (35 pound), low-profile kingpin. This removes in less than a minute to completely clear out the truckbed, and can just as easily convert to a gooseneck hitch. Ackerman has found the underbed installation for the new hitch simpler and faster than other trailer hitches, which translates into better use of labor and greater profits. "Some hitch installs take as much as a foot square of material from the truckbed, or may put a 4-plus inch square-cut hole in it. I stay away from those," says Ackerman. The freedom hitch by Putnam requires only a 3 1/8-inch hole. "It's the smallest hole in the truckbed I'm aware of," says Ackerman. "The system also preserves the truck's original structure. Wherever possible, they use factory access holes rather than drilling into the frame. You don't have to raise or remove the pickup bed, either."
