No appointments are necessary. All State Used Oil Collection Centers are certified *by the California Integrated Waste Management Board. Most locations acccept drained oil filters as well as used motor oil. The Centers offer a $0.16 per gallon recycling incentive to the public. Please call for hours of operation. It is illegal to leave oil afterbusiness hours. "The Used Oil Recycling Program is funded by a grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board." PREPARATION Motor oil brought to recycling centers must not be contaminated . Never mix solvents, water, gasoline or antifreeze with your used oil. Use plastic containers that seal tightly and are pourable. Oil is accepted in 5 gallon (or smaller) containers with a 5 gallon limit per day. Filters must be drained and put in a leak proof container. Call the center before you take in your oil. If their tank is full, they can refer you to another nearby location. Bring your oil ONLY during hours of operation . Free oil recycling containers are available at the Del Norte Regional Recycling & Transfer Station and Oxnard Fire Stations. Make it a policy not to throw anything overboard. It is illegal to discharge waste, oil or trash into the water. You must immediately notify the U.S. Coast Guard ( 1-800-424-8802) and the Dept. of Environmental Protection (1-800-304-1133) if your vessel discharges oil or hazardous substances into the water. Keep a supply of oil absorbent rags on board for oil and fuel leaks. Use non-toxic cleaners on board that do not contain phosphates which are toxic to aquatic ecosystems. Recycle fluids at your marina such as engine or out drive oil, and ethylene glycol (toxic) antifreeze. Recycle oil filters and batteries. Return to Top 19 . It is illegal to harass, hunt, capture, or kill any marine mammal. This includes negligent or intentional acts which result in the disturbance or molestation of a marine mammal. The U.S. Coast Guard should be notified of any such actions ( 1-800-424-8802). Return to Top 20. Weather conditions are of great importance to all water users. Become familiar with your local weather related services. NOAA weather radios will announce special marine warnings issued by the local National Weather Service ( http://www.nws.noaa.gov/ ) Always check the local weather outlook before launching.
