Discovered in 1634 by Jean Nicolet, it became a dependency of France, only 14 years after the landing of the Pilgrims. With theconvenience of water transportation, increasing numbers of explorers, traders,and settlers continued to arrive, stake out property boundaries, and establisha mode of life. The county is named for an Indiannation in the area whose land was purchased by the U.S. Government, which inturn opened the land to settlers. Abundant water which provided access inthe early days is still a valuable asset. It has 80,000 acres occupied bystreams, rivers , and ten surveyed lakes. Lake Winnebago is the largestlake in Wisconsin and one of the largest in the nation contained in one state. Oshkosh , located at the point where theFox River flows into Lake Winnebago, was an early center of the lumberindustry. Rivers and lakes brought logs from Northern Wisconsin and formany years lumbering was the leading industry of the city. Enormousfortunes were made, serving as a background for the diversified industries whichfollowed. Neenah and Menasha , known as the Twincities, lie at the northern end of the lake and the county, where the Fox Riverflows out of Lake Winnebago. This is where early centers for millingwheat and lumber were situated. Later, as manufacturing grew in importanceand railroads replaced rivers and lakes as a means of transportation, the citiesbecame more important industrial centers, especially forthe paper industry. Residents of Winnebago County enjoy thelife of a "small town" with "big city" recreation andentertainment close by. There is boating and fishing on the lakes,rivers and streams, and a recreational trail for hiking, biking andsnowmobiling. Each July, Oshkosh plays host to the Experimental AircraftAssociation ( EAA ) Fly-in and Convention with visitors from all around theworld. Not far away is Green Bay (and the Green Bay Packers ) and Milwaukee (home to the Milwaukee Brewers and the MilwaukeeBucks ) with museums, galleries,zoos, and theaters.
