I like the idea of stopping wherever I want, cooking my own meals and not having to unpack in a half dozen hotels on a week long trip. However, I didn't want to drive and park something the size of school bus. I recently discovered the perfect solution: renting a Volkswagen Westfalia camper van. The Westfalia camper van is about the size of a standard mini-van, easy to park and drive. It is also a camper, with stove, sink and refrigerator, and, thanks to its easy-to-pop-up top, it has two double beds. We enjoyed the convenience of the camper van, especially when we parked at a scenic spot, lifted the top, and enjoyed a meal with a view at our own private table. At night, we cooked dinner on our gas stove, ate at an insect-free table for two, and slept soundly on a comfortable bed. In the morning, we made coffee without stepping outside. When it was time to park, the camper van slid into a standard parking place with no fuss. For two people camping in Yosemite, the Westfalia camper van's rental cost was comparable to lower-priced hotels in the park, and it was available with much less advance notice (and almost half of Yosemite's camping sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis). In other locations, an inexpensive hotel or motel may be less expensive than the camper van, but consider the cost of meals as well as convenience before making a decision. If you decide to rent a camper van, here are few tips to help make your experience more comfortable: Be sure you know exactly what will be provided in the camper van. Ask about what's in the kitchen kit, and rent sheets and towels if you need them. The Westfalia camper van does not have electrical connections, but they do have interior lights that operate from the auxiliary battery. When you check the camper van out, it looks simple when someone else shows it to you, but it becomes complex when you have to do it yourself. Make notes, and do everything yourself. Otherwise, you'll spend the first three days of your trip wondering exactly how you were supposed to start the refrigerator, or how to turn off the heater. If you want to cook meals in the camper van, plan them in advance, and make a grocery list. You may want to bring a few staples from home, such as salt, sugar and cooking oil. Unless you are planning on traveling a very short distance, opt for unlimited miles. The small difference in daily rate pays for your peace of mind. The step in and out of the camper van is a little high, and you have to get over the wheel well. If anyone in your party has mobility problems, discuss them before you rent. I rented the Westfalia camper van from California Campers in Redwood City (south of the San Francisco Airport). They also have an office in Los Angeles. Rentals are also available from other companies listed in the sidebar, including one that rents in San Diego. Volvo claims a 99-percent satisfaction rating for the program, and company officials backed that claim up with a brief video compilation of customer reactions to the program. In truth, it was a bit like one of those late night paid advertising shows, where everyone seems almost too happy about the product. The Volvo folks even admitted to concerns over the abundance of mirth displayed on the video, as they feared it might seem disingenuous. But after trying the program firsthand, complete with ordering a new Volvo V70 R to our exact standards, picking it up at the factory in Gothenburg, and touring the Swedish countryside for three days, we could readily see ourselves contributing to the videotaped fervor. Volvo further told us that 70 percent of OSD Program customers are "conquest" (that means they are first-time Volvo buyers), and 42 percent say they wouldn't have bought a new car from Volvo if the program wasn't offered. Of course Volvo isn't the only company to offer an overseas delivery system. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and even Volvo's home-country rival, Saab, all offer similar European purchase options. But of the roughly 6,000 overseas delivery cars sold last year to U.S. customers, Volvo had the largest share of the market, with approximately 2,300 sales in 2004. BMW was right behind it with around 2,200 sales, but then there was a big drop to Mercedes at 1,300 and Saab at around 200. Porsche's 2004 overseas delivery sales numbers weren't available, but considering it has the only program that costs more than buying the same car in the U.S., we can assume its sales numbers are pretty small. So far for 2005 Volvo's overseas delivery sales are up nearly 30 percent ahead of that 2004 number, which should put the program into its fourth straight year of growth. What's driving the increasing popularity of this program? Is it the thought of saving 8 percent on the price of a new Volvo? Is it the included round-trip airfare, factory tour and one-night hotel stay at the SAS Radisson Hotel in Gothenburg? Is it the prospect of visiting a country where even the airport baggage handlers could pass for supermodels? The answer is "yes" to all of those, but the real beauty of the program comes from the extensive range of travel options offered by Volvo. Beyond the included airfare, hotel night, factory tour and premium delivery experience that every OSD customer gets, there are several travel options that can be purchased at extremely competitive rates. For example, if you bought a well-equipped XC90 2.5T AWD model through the OSD program you'd pay approximately $40,000, saving about $3,500 over the MSRP at your local Volvo dealer in the U.S. But you'd also get the free airfare to Gothenburg, one hotel night stay at the Radisson, a factory tour with VIP delivery process and 15 days of European automobile insurance — all for two adults and all included with the $40,000 price. But if you spend approximately $3,000 on the Castles and Manor Houses tour you — and a friend/significant other — can enjoy seven days of driving along the Swedish countryside between Gothenburg and Stockholm while staying at some of the country's premier mansions and enjoying three-course dinners. That means you're still $500 "to the good" in terms of what you've spent on the car, and now you're both touring Sweden for a week. You can take shorter tours for less money, or spend more for longer stays. We took an abridged version of the Castles and Manor Houses tour, and we can vouch for the quality of the accommodations, food and hospitality. Children are also a welcome part of the OSD, and can be added to these tour packages for between $150 and $600 per child, depending on the vacation package. Beyond the Castles and Manor Houses tour there's a range of trips with a focus on everything from Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway and Denmark) to European driving adventures going as far south as Barcelona. And because Volvo allows for vehicle drop-off at 20 different locations throughout Europe you can either stick with the company's preplanned tours or strike out on your own (though you likely won't get as competitive of travel rates). There's even an R Event Tour that allows customers to purchase an S60 R or V70 R , drive it on the German autobahns, attend a Formula 1 event, visit the famous Nürburgring racetrack and upgrade to business class travel. The details and pricing for all of these trips are constantly updated, so visit your local dealership or go to Volvo's OSD Web page for the latest information. If there's a downside to the program, it's that when you eventually return home your car won't be waiting for you. In fact, you'll be waiting approximately 6-10 weeks for it. Obviously this type of delay won't work for some new-car buyers, so keep it in mind if you plan on utilizing Volvo's OSD. But if you can afford the several-week wait on your next Volvo's arrival Stateside, the Overseas Delivery Program offers a compelling mix of value and fun. Habitat for Humanity International’s RV Care-A-Vanner program offers anyone who travels in a recreational vehicle the opportunity to make a difference — and have fun while doing it — by helping build houses with families in need. The RV Care-A-Vanner program welcomes people of all ages and from all walks of life who are ready to pick up a hammer and help change lives. No Experience Necessary Every RV Care-A-Vanner building project is a unique and rewarding experience. Previous RV Care-A-Vanner teams have participated in house construction, roofing, interior and finish work, renovations and disaster relief. Those who prefer to be non-builders volunteer in the affiliate office or as “go fors” around the build site. There are ample opportunities to learn and plenty of meaningful work for everyone — no experience necessary. RV Care-A-Vanner builds normally involve eight to 20 RVing volunteers and last two weeks, with ten six- to seven-hour workdays. A typical day begins with devotions and includes morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. Volunteers bring sturdy work shoes and gloves, and their personal hand tools -- tool belt, hammer, square, pencil, measuring tape. The affiliate provides everything else including power tools, ladders, building materials, instruction and supervision. A volunteer leader handles the organization and administration of the team. Team members pay their own expenses, which may be tax deductible, and the host affiliate arranges for RV parking — usually free or at a nominal charge. Teams can expect at least minimal electric hookups, access to water and a dump station nearby. Hosting affiliates often also provide lunches and a welcome gathering. Due to safety and hygiene issues, pets are not permitted on the work site. Aside from the opportunity to use existing construction skills and learn new ones, RV Care-A-Vanner teams experience God’s love in action firsthand. Lasting friendships develop as the group parks together, builds together, eats together and socializes. In addition, the team often has the opportunity to work alongside local volunteers and future homeowners — a truly unforgettable experience. Check the Build Listing for builds that fit your travel plans. More Than Houses Habitat for Humanity and the RV Care-A-Vanners are about much more than building houses. Many team members partner with Habitat affiliates around the country to promote awareness of poverty housing and homelessness by speaking to churches, civic groups and local media. Individual Care-A-Vanners often make financial contributions to the host affiliate and houses built by RV groups are sometimes funded through fund raising and donations from the members. RV Care-A-Vanners are encouraged to help defray the cost of the program by donating on line.
