RV Buyers Survival Guide"

About the author of "The RV Buyers Survival Guide" __________ " RVBuyers Survival Guide" Dato Marketing Associates 800-771-2587 About The Author of "TheRV Buyers Survival Guide" The author, like many of you, is a "Baby Boomer" and has spent his working life in the recreational vehicle industry. He started camping with his family in the 1950s and went into the RV business in the early '70s. He spent his first few years working as a Customer Service Manager, and later, sold RVs. Over the next twenty years, he moved up to the position of Director of Sales for the largest manufacturer of recreational vehicles in North America. After more than two decades in the industry, he retired and began a career at the retail dealer level - helping customers find the "means to their dreams." Through his many years associating with RV owners, he met many happy and excited ones and many prospective buyers. Unfortunately, over those same years, he also heard many horror stories from disenchanted customers who had suffered nightmarish experiences while trying to find their dream RV. Most of these bad buying experiences could have been avoided if the sales person had been more concerned with the customer's "true needs" instead of trying to sell them the "Special of the Week" for the best commission. Many of the horror stories told to the author by these dissatisfied RV buyers wouldn't have occurred had the customer understood the RV buying process. In other words, they caused their own problems. Unlike buying a car, where there is a wealth of information available - including annual reviews and ratings in magazines like Consumer Reports - the would-be RV owner has a tough time finding quality information. And so it's much easier to fall victim to a bad deal. And that's where this guide fits in. If you put into practice the insider knowledge here, you will have a much more positive and rewarding experience. Whether you are just starting out on the RV lifestyle or simply extending the trip as an existing owner, there is much you can learn and profit from by reading this manual. Order the book Introduction Congratulations. If you are reading this guide, you are likely preparing to take a big step forward in your life by joining many millions of others who have discovered the RV lifestyle. Being an RVer in today's society is partially about escaping the realities of our everyday lives, but it's also about enjoying the beauty of our magnificent country at your own pace - and doing it in your very own rolling home. It's not about scrambling from one motel to another, from one strange bed to another, or from plastic meal to another. RVing is about traveling with all the comforts of home. It's about freedom! To truly enjoy this lifestyle, you must first have the means to seek the dream - the RV. At first thought, you might say, "No big deal. I'll just go buy something and then hit the road." Hold that thought! This can very well be your first step toward a nightmare that's repeated day in and day out in every corner of America. RV buyers sign on the bottom line without getting the best deal. These people envision an RV as their ticket to adventure and serenity. And with this lofty dream in mind, they walk blindly into an RV dealership - so consumed by their dream that they ignore one stark reality: that without the proper knowledge of what they are doing they can easily, and inadvertently, hand over too much of their hard-earned money to someone who may not have their best interests in mind. The purpose of this guide is to properly prepare you to make an informed purchase. In some instances, an RV can cost as much, if not more, than a regular home - the kind without wheels! Most of us buy and trade our automobiles every few years. And with only a relatively few car manufacturers to choose from, there is a great deal of information available. So we most often come away from a purchase satisfied. However, unlike an automobile, which serves primarily to get us from point A to point B, an RV serves as a "home" that goes to all points of the compass. There are literally hundreds of RV manufacturers building a mind-boggling number of brands. Most offer dozens of floor plans in each model. With the help of this guide, you will be able to sort through the nearly countless choices and determine what is right for you. And, then - and only then - the "insider" information in this guide will provide you with the ammunition you'll need negotiate a fair price. There is no reason you should feel lost and confused as you take the first steps in the search for this better lifestyle. Whether you are brand new to RVing or are an experienced trader, there is information here that will enlighten and reward you in many ways. Buying an RV is not just about what you pay for it. It's about making sure that you get what you pay for and that what you get is what you need. So take about two hours to carefully read this guide. You bought it, so read it. If you calculate how much you'll likely save with this new knowledge, you'll earn in savings the equivalent of thousands of dollars per hour. Now how often do you get an opportunity like that short of winning a lottery? Once you have done this "homework," you will be ready to start your search with the confidence that you will not be "taken," but will have the tools necessary to negotiate the best deal. Order The Book Testimonials This is what Chuck Woodbury, noted author and editor of hundreds of articles on Rvs' and the RV lifestyle had to say about the Rv Buyers Survival Guide; " No other book on the market today addresses the basic fear of most new RV buyers --of being "taken"--of paying much more than the dealer would have accepted. In it he reveals what you will not find in any other RV book I know of, the "do's" and "don'ts" that can make a huge difference in how much a buyer pays for an RV. If you plan to buy an RV, you MUST read this book first." "I just had to write to tell you about my experience with your book! I read it twice and went directly to the dealer that had the 5th wheel I was interested in buying. After loading up on options, I calculated both his and my price and was prepared to make an offer. Along the way, I had dropped some hint words that I picked up from your book and the dealer seemed to know I was knowledgeable in what I was doing. To my surprise, he came back to me with a bid only $75 higher than I would have offered. I signed right then and there. Your book saved me $8,000 and the wisdom of what to look for in a dealer has made me confident that I have done so. Thank you." "We just finished reading the survival guide and our eyes have truly been opened to the realities of buying an RV. There is so much information in this guide that one should know before buying. Mr Randall is truly an expert on RVs and I do think with the information we now have, we will make the right choice in our purchase and we will save thousands of dollars off the list price as he says. I would have paid for more for this book had I only known all the value it has. Keep up the great work Bob you are truly doing the buying public a great service in sharing this insider information." "Not only did I buy the guide, I used it and walked into the dealership with confidence, said all the "right things" as you instructed, and walked away the proud owner of a 2001 Damon Intruder with 8000 miles on it for $69000! I feel like I did well since they were asking $79,900. Its amazing how they did everything just like the book said. It was almost like a game for me to play and watch them respond right on cue! Thanks so much, I can truly say the book was money well spent!" "Today, we looked at many units and had just about given up, but finally an Itasca seemed to fit the bill. So we purchased it. . . . The one piece of advice I found in your book was to argue the price and I did. I remembered your formula and I worked from that and fought for a larger price reduction. Yes, we did get it. I am very proud of me today, but that is only thanks to you. I would not usually have the nerve to fight. "This book helped us to stay in control during the negotiations for our new Class A motorhome. We feel that we negotiated a fair price for the coach and it was in line with the what the book stated about wholesale vs. retail price of a coach. Prior to purchasing this book we were involved in a deal that went south and was a disaster. We had a hard time getting our down payment back when they could not deliver. This time as we entered into negotiations, we felt confident and entered on our terms." "I wanted to let you know how useful your book was. It gave me the information and I ended up paying 12% over dealer cost. Your book took all of the anxiety out of the negotiation process and I ended up with a fair transaction for all parties. Many Thanks." "We saved a little over $10,000; the dealer made $3,000 for a phone call to the factory rep. He is happy. We are happy. A lot of our happiness comes from reading your book." "This guide. . . explains the ins and outs of the industry, the best time to buy, and finally the purchasing process, where you can save thousands of dollars. We found this guide very easy to follow and when my wife and I applied his step by step instructions, by the time negotiations were over we had saved thousands of dollars! Bob even taught us how to receive more thousands in the value of our trade. It was a great feeling knowing we had the confidence to walk into the sales office being one-up on the dealer and their sales staff." "We really want to thank you. We pick up our new RV tomorrow. We got a Class C Gulfstream 2002 Conquest Sport Model 6316S RV Motor Home. We got 21% off the MSRP. Believe me we were not savvy when it came to negotiating before reading the book. We were not savvy to anything about buying big ticket items before reading your book. We each read the RV Buyers Survival Guide twice. We took notes before going to the dealer. Instead of the buying process being a nightmare, it was a dream. I have written down the few things that need to be corrected before we pick it up tomorrow and have made it clear that we will not sign the loan papers until all is as it should be." "I am very pleased with the guide, and would have paid more for it, since it will probably save me much more when I am in the process of buying a travel trailer. Yes,the print size is excellent, especially for the many folks who are senior citizens and need a slightly larger print size. I would highly recommend the guide to anyone who is thinking of becoming an RV owner." "This publication provides a good overview of the choices and decisions to be made in purchasing any size RV. I found it especially helpful when it came time to negotiate a deal on a new RV. Bob gives details on typical dealer markups and lets you know how to figure a fair price. He also gives step by step advice on how to negotiate with the dealer. I felt much more confident in my negotiations and knew I walked out with a good deal. This book can save you lots of grief and money!" "Not only did I buy the guide, I used it and walked into the dealership with confidence, said all the 'right things' as you instructed, and walked away the proud owner of a 2001 Damon Intruder with 8000 miles on it for $69,000! Thanks so much, I can truly say the book was money well spent!" "This how to book is a must if you plan to purchase a new or used RV. The guide walks you through the shopping process and describes the many types of Rv's that are on the market, and how to choose the best one to suit your needs. There is also a glossary of terms that are used in the RV business that will help you to talk the talk. After you have done all your research, have found the RV of your dreams, and are finally ready to take the big step towards the purchase, this guide excells in teaching you how to make your best deal. It explains the ins and outs of the industry, the best time to buy, and finally the purchasing process, where you can save thousands of dollars. By Rudi Williams American Forces Press Service ALEXANDRIA, Va., Jan. 5, 2001 -- The mobile home lifestyle strikes the fancies and suits the pocketbooks of many service members and DoD civilian employees. And some relish the idea of taking their homes with them when they change duty stations at government expense. But Military Traffic Transportation Command officials warn: "History has shown that moving your mobile home will most likely result in excess transportation costs, which you are responsible for paying." And, they said, that cost could run over $1,000. The government will only pay up to what it costs to ship the members household goods weight allowance to the next duty station. Last year, 97 service members moved their trailers. Many more got rid of their trailers because of the high cost of moving them. For example, a married E-4 with four years of service and two children and a trailer home is authorized to ship 8,000 pounds of household goods. Transportation officials calculate that shipping the trailer and packing and unpacking rates would be $37.80 per 100 pounds, which results in the government paying up to $3,024 for the move. Based on the weight of the household goods, the shipping cost comes to $1,532, which means the service member's out-of-pocket cost to ship the mobile home is $1,492. DoD civilian employees are authorized to ship their mobile homes as long as it's included in their permanent change of station orders, according to Dennis Barborak, an MTMC traffic management specialist. "Those who want to ship a mobile home must own it or have permission from the lien holder to move it," Barborak said. He said safety-wise, the body and chassis of the mobile home, including tires and tubes, must be roadworthy and will withstand the rigors of the move. The home must also meet the size and weight limitations imposed by the state to which it's being shipped. Mobile homes can be shipped to and from duty stations in the continental United States and Alaska with the government paying for transportation and accessorial services. "But the government will not pay for replacement parts, brake repairs, tires and repairs and maintenance performed en route, except for labor cost to repair tires and inner tubes," said Gail Collier, another traffic management specialist. Collier said eligible service members and civilian employees have three options to ship their mobile home: "Owners can tow their mobile home and file for reimbursement," Collier said. "They should keep receipts of such expenses as fuel, oil, tolls, parking, permits and escort services, to support their claim for reimbursement." Another option is to have the government arrange the move. The local transportation office and the commercial carrier assumes most of the responsibility. However, the owner is responsible for ensuring that the mobile home is roadworthy, it complies with state codes, has the required primary axles, tires and brakes and is mechanically sound. The third option is to obtain written authorization from the local transportation office to draw an advance mobile home allowance from the government. Collier emphasized that mobile home owners must obtain an itemized invoice identifying all costs incurred from the carrier and promptly settle the account with the finance office after completing the move. Regardless of the method used, those who ship mobile homes are covered by the Military Personnel and Civilian Employees' Claims Act for loss and damage during transit. However, homeowners must be able to show that they didn't contribute to the loss or damage. The government will pay for mobile home carrier's transportation charges, including movement via a circuitous route, when required. DoD will also pay for bridge, road and tunnel tolls, ferry fares, state or local transit permits and oversize charges and permits. The government will further cover labor costs for removal and installation of skirting, clocking, unanchoring and anchoring, packing and unpacking of household goods in the mobile home, repairing tires, disconnecting and connecting utilities, disassembling and reassembling expando or fold-out rooms and renting extra axles with wheels and tires attached. This covers costs associated with movement of a doublewide mobile home. "Usually personal property inside the mobile home that was not factory installed may not be shipped due to safety reasons," Collier said. Barborak said there are many items that shouldn't be left inside when shipping your trailer. These include, concrete blocks, skirting, metal awnings, steps, fences, central air conditioners, garden storage sheds, swing sets, satellite dishes, outside television antennas and yard and porch furniture. Other items that shouldn't be left inside a mobile home include snowmobiles, motorcycles, motorbikes, bicycles, lawn mowers or heavy tool chests. The no-no list also includes fuel, ammunition, flammables, waterbeds and full aquariums, and live animals and plants or flower boxes. Barborak also advises removing such valuables as money, bonds, stocks, jewelry and furs. "The carrier will not be liable in any way for intangible property, nor for the intrinsic or sentimental value of an item," Barborak emphasized. "Service members need to be aware that they're responsible for meeting certain restrictions on such structural designs and the roof and heating and cooling system for the area they're moving to," Collier said. "Failing to do so may mean that the destination county may refuse hook up to water and electricity. A service member is entitled to Storage-In-Transit of their mobile home up to 90 days. An additional 90 days may be authorized for conditions beyond the members control. Storage may also be authorized for local moves if the owner is ordered to vacate the premises by the commanding officer of the installation. "If an emergency or hardship arises, the owner should request a 90-day extension," Collier said. "But, no matter what the circumstances, the government will not pay for more than 180 days. After that, the owner must pay the cost of further storage." Mobile home owners can get a copy of "Moving Your Mobile Home" pamphlet at: http://www.belvoir.army.mil/jppsowa/HomeCore.htm .
