RV Travel with a Purpose… RV Care-A-Vanners -- Habitat for Humanity Int'l 1 RV Travel with a Purpose… RV Care-A-Vanners RV travel just got better! Habitat for Humanity International’s RV Care-A-Vanner program offers anyone who travels in a recreational vehicle the opportunity to make a difference — and have fun while doing it — by helping build houses with families in need. The RV Care-A-Vanner program welcomes people of all ages and from all walks of life who are ready to pick up a hammer and help change lives. No Experience Necessary Every RV Care-A-Vanner building project is a unique and rewarding experience. Previous RV Care-A-Vanner teams have participated in house construction, roofing, interior and finish work, renovations and disaster relief. Those who prefer to be non-builders volunteer in the affiliate office or as “go fors” around the build site. There are ample opportunities to learn and plenty of meaningful work for everyone — no experience necessary. RV Care-A-Vanner builds normally involve eight to 20 RVing volunteers and last two weeks, with ten six- to seven-hour workdays. A typical day begins with devotions and includes morning, lunch and afternoon breaks. Volunteers bring sturdy work shoes and gloves, and their personal hand tools -- tool belt, hammer, square, pencil, measuring tape. The affiliate provides everything else including power tools, ladders, building materials, instruction and supervision. A volunteer leader handles the organization and administration of the team. Team members pay their own expenses, which may be tax deductible, and the host affiliate arranges for RV parking — usually free or at a nominal charge. Teams can expect at least minimal electric hookups, access to water and a dump station nearby. Hosting affiliates often also provide lunches and a welcome gathering. Due to safety and hygiene issues, pets are not permitted on the work site. Aside from the opportunity to use existing construction skills and learn new ones, RV Care-A-Vanner teams experience God’s love in action firsthand. Lasting friendships develop as the group parks together, builds together, eats together and socializes. In addition, the team often has the opportunity to work alongside local volunteers and future homeowners — a truly unforgettable experience. Check the Build Listing for builds that fit your travel plans. More Than Houses Habitat for Humanity and the RV Care-A-Vanners are about much more than building houses. Many team members partner with Habitat affiliates around the country to promote awareness of poverty housing and homelessness by speaking to churches, civic groups and local media. Individual Care-A-Vanners often make financial contributions to the host affiliate and houses built by RV groups are sometimes funded through fund raising and donations from the members. RV Care-A-Vanners are encouraged to help defray the cost of the program by donating on line.

Friday January 20, 2006 | permalink Staying Warm Sunnycamper posted in the Camping Forum that she had recently purchased a Marmot Women's Mavericks 15 mummy sleeping bag, thinking it would keep her warm in North Florida. She goes on to say: "I tent camp with my son's Cubscout Pack, and I just put the bag to the test this past weekend. We estimate the temperature got down to around 30 degrees. There was no rain and no wind. When it was time to hit the hay, I started with two layers of long johns, one silk and one cotton, and quickly had to put on one more layer. I added a set of sweats. I did fall asleep for a short time, but woke up shivering and had to put on my ski jacket. I'm pretty sure my ski jacket has some kind of Thinsulate or equivalent insulation, and I was able to stay warm through the night, more or less. I was wearing a fleece hat and wool socks, and the head part of the mummy bag was totally closed. I was very disappointed in having to put on my jacket, as I thought the investment in this bag would eliminate that need. Thought I was doing all the right things with the layers. The top piece closest to my skin was actually a Patagonia Capilene. My bag was on a Thermarest Z-lite sleeping pad which was in turn on top of an inflatable air mattress. ( I know, the air mattress is probably a no-no, but I'm going to give that up as a last resort.) My Coleman Sundome 10x10 tent was pitched on top of a blue tarp. What else can I do? Put my mummy inside of another bag? I also don't have a lot of "natural" insulation. I'm a slim gal, 5'7 and about 130 lbs. Any advice on layers, etc would be welcome." Sunnycamper received several good suggestions in reply, but I like Bruce's best. He took a different approach and suggested that she had on way too much clothing. Read more... Monday January 16, 2006 | permalink Why Stake Your Tent? So it doesn't blow away. To understand the adverse effects that wind can play on a tent, one need only look at a tent from an aerodynamic perspective. The consequence of wind blowing across the dome shape of a tent is not unlike that of air passing over the curved wing of an airplane, namely lift. And this lift is the main reason why you need to stake your tent, for without the stakes your tent could quickly become a kite in the lightest of winds and destroy itself as it tumbles through the woods or across the sand dunes. My father-in-law gave me one of these for Christmas. I immediately thought how great this would be for camping. It's about the size of a cell phone, it's lightweight, and it requires no batteries. A few turns of the crank provides all the energy needed to light either 1 or 3 LEDs. An ideal emergency flashlight for backpackers, boaters, or campers.
