Their occupation of Wisconsin is very ancient, perhaps thousands of years. Although they have no memories of mound-building, they may well be descendents of the earlier Mississippian, Hopewell, and Adena cultures. Their homeland lay between Green Bay and Lake Winnebago in northeast Wisconsin but they dominated the area from Upper Michigan south to present-day Milwaukee extending west to the Mississippi. Beginning in the 1640s, thousands of Algonquin refugees from the Beaver Wars (1630-1701) invaded Wisconsin from the east, and the resulting wars and epidemics brought the resident tribes, Winnebago and Menominee, to the point of near extinction. The Winnebago who survived remained near Green Bay but were forced to share their homeland with other tribes. After the French and Great Lakes Algonquin victory over the Iroquois in 1701, many of the refugee tribes left Wisconsin allowing the Winnebago to reclaim some of their homeland - especially after the near-annihilation of the Fox during the Fox Wars (1712-16 and 1728-37). The Winnebago spread south afterwards along the Wisconsin and Rock Rivers into southern Wisconsin eventually claiming a portion of northwestern Illinois. American settlement of Wisconsin began after 1825, and the Winnebago rapidly lost territory. By 1840 the Winnebago had ceded their Wisconsin land and agreed to move to northeast Iowa. Despite this many Winnebago remained in Wisconsin defying efforts to remove them. During the next 50 years, the the Winnebago were shifted around like a piece of unwanted baggage. In 1848 the Winnebago were sent north to the Crow Wing River in Minnesota. Eight years later, they were moved south to Blue Earth county, Minnesota where they remained until after the Sioux uprising in 1862. Although the Winnebago had no part in this, the government deported them to South Dakota and placed with the Nakota (Yankton Sioux). At this point, the Winnebago began to rebel. Many left the reservation and returned to Iowa, Minnesota or Wisconsin. The others fled down the Missouri to the Omaha Reservation in Nebraska. In 1865 the government accepted this and created a separate Winnebago Reservation (40,000 acres) in northeast Nebraska. During their many moves, many Winnebago never left Wisconsin. In addition, some had managed to stay in northeast Iowa and southern Minnesota when the main group was moved. Raided by the Lakota and pressured to allot their reservation, many Winnebago left Nebraska during the 1870s and 80s and went home to Wisconsin. The government would send them back, but the Winnebago just kept going, and the government finally gave up and purchased land in Wisconsin for the Winnebago. As a result, there are two separate Winnebago tribes today: the Wisconsin Winnebago with 4,400 acres (333 acres tribally owned) scattered in small holdings across ten counties; and the Nebraska Winnebago who still have 27,500 acres from their 1865 reservation, 3,100 belongs to the tribe. Even more important, The Artist uses vehicles to work in the small towns of Oregon for art shows and more. The Donation Merry-Go-'Round It's easy enough to donate your RV, van or motor home -- and many people and groups out there are making generic pleas for such donations. If you are considering giving such a valuable gift, please ask yourself: What is going to happen to my gift and what sort of thing am I supporting? Is it really a worthy cause and will my gift make a real difference in the world or am I dealing with a profitable business with a thin charitable disguise? Charity Scamathon The sad fact is, I just saw one of these wonderful gifts on eBay where they came out and said the person had donated it to a "charity" and now this private party is selling it on eBay for 100% profit! It isn't like they are all scams, and as long as these charit front groups tell you they are going to turn around and sell your donation, fine. There is nothing wrong with legitimate charities turning a profit on donations if the gift-giver knows that is what they are going to do and doesn't have a problem with it. But I suspect that this is often not the case, although I can't prove it. Making The Choice Giving the gift of a vehicle is a big deal, especially consideringyour personal investment, so you should choose carefully. You've invested yourself and your hard-earned dollars in a vehicle that you are now going to just give away. Shouldn't something really good come out of this? Now here's the really good news: One person can make a big difference by donating directly to a working, traveling artist who brings joy and culture to some of the back roads of America. It's not your usual charity thing, this is different! This is an entirely different way to see a gift like this: Instead of an arms-length business transaction, why not make a direct connection with the recipient? Instead of making your donation to a monolithic, impersonal charity mill, why not have the satisfaction of knowing that your gift is being put to positive use? Mobile Art & History ChrissPagani has been doing impromptu roadside art shows for some time now. While traveling around sketching and preserving in paint the disappearing color ofrural America. These art shows are far more than sales pitches: they bring theculture of contemporary art to those who would otherwise never see it while preserving the life of middle America for future generations. The artist has a goal of continuing this adventure of the human spirit while preserving America's rapidly-disappearing uniqueness, but the old motor home is very tired, it's on its last legs and gas is getting beyond the range of affordable. For those who love the artist's work, especially the paintings of Oregon - or who simply love the highest of expression of the human spirit that art represents - this is an opportunity to make a difference. Let's be blunt, here: Without your support, the preservation of traditional America and the message of The Artist could be in jeopardy of being lost. Any help is appreciated, including cash donations. One things that is needed is a replacement class A, B (van conversion) or C motor home that is in somewhat better mechanical condition so that the art mission can continue. Even a small car that could save some fuel would help a great deal. The artist is always willing to do some work but your donated vehicle should be driveable as and currently licensed to be movable. Choosing What Is Right Thebig charity mills offer prepackaged forms, plain vanilla tax deduction receipts and not much else. The beneficiary of your gift, assuming there actually is a real person on the other end, will never know who you are or why you chose to do what you did. Maybe it is time to think differently. Instead of an anonymous tax deduction, why not take direct action and give your gift ot a real person who will appreciate what you've done? By making this direct connection, you'll know what your investment is doing for the world -- because you'll see it in art shows! Don't wait, contact The Artist today. The artistwill pick-up your vehicle anywhere as long as it is in good working conditionand you can present a clear title. The more work it needs, the closer it needsto be to the Northern coast of Oregon. It'sup to you... This will allow a working artist to continue doing what the working artist does:Preserving a dying part of America in a tangible way and introducing small townsand fellow travelers to the highest of human culture. Now you can be part of something that is bigger than ourselves. The most certain thing in life is uncertainty: Maybe you had an idea that you were going to do a lot of traveling but it didn't work out for one reason or another, or it proved to be more of a hassle than you thought. Sometimes God works in mysterious ways. What ever has brought you here, you are here for a reason. Now is the time to let the miraculous work through you . Yours truly, -- Chriss Pagani Diesel Motor HomeThe Most Complete RV Resource Recreational Vehicle Recreational Vehicle (or RV) is a term used in North America to describe a large enclosed piece of equipment with wheels designed to be moved from place to place for people to temporarily live in and be protected from the elements while away from their permanent home. While RVs are intended for brief leisure activities such as vacations and camping, some people, especially retirees, live in their units and are known as fulltimers. RVs can be rented in major U.S. and Canadian cities. There are different classes of vehicles generally labelled as RVs: A truck camperTruck Camper - unit is affixed to the bed or chassis of a pickup truck. Folding Camping Trailer - also known as a pop-up trailer; a light-weight unit with sides that collapse for towing and storage Travel Trailer - heavier unit with rigid sides designed to be towed by most vehicles by means of a bumper or frame hitch Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer - designed to be towed by a pickup truck equipped with a special hitch in the truck bed Park Model - designed for occasional relocation and will require a special tow vehicle and a highway movement permit Motorhome ("Winnebago", a product of the Winnebago Company that dominated the market for many years, was long a synonym for a motorhome, but this usage has faded in recent years.) Class A Motorcoach - constructed on a specially designed motor vehicle chassis, typically resembling a bus Class B Campervan - built using a conventional van, to which a raised roof has been added Class C Mini-motorhome - built on an automotive manufactured chassis with an attached van cab section Toterhome, a motor home built around a semi truck chassis such as a freightliner. This type of motor home allows you to pull large and heavy trailers while having all the conveniences of a large motor home A minimal RV typically contains beds, a table, food preparation and storage areas. Larger models add full bathrooms, refrigerators, living areas, master bedrooms, etc. Some RVs are very elaborate, with satellite TV and internet access, slide-out wall panels, and awnings; many RVs can cost in excess of $100,000 and some can cost over $1 million. These high end RVs typically need to be financed by banks or specialized lenders. Many RVers stay at RV parks, most of which feature electrical, water and sewer service (full hookups), as well as cable television and wireless Internet. Amenties often include swimming pools, gamerooms and even destination-resort activities such as horseback riding. Advantages of RVs include not having to move one's things in and out of motel rooms, not having to rent multiple motel rooms, and the fact that preparing food saves money compared to eating in restaurants. At the same time, an RV provides more organized living space and better protection from the weather than a tent. Children also tend to like RVs. Disadvantages of RVs include low fuel economy for the motorized RV or tow vehicle, lack of maid service as experienced in motels (maid service is available at a few high-end resorts), and larger RV models can be hard for the novice to drive or tow. Some people also live in RVs because they lack funds for more conventional housing. Similarly, RVs ? specifically, trailers which strongly resemble travel trailers, but usually with fewer amenities ? have been used to temporarily house victims of natural disasters. A notable example is Hurricane Katrina; the federal disaster relief agency FEMA has ordered large numbers of such trailers to house victims of the storm in Louisiana and Mississippi. Some people craft their own RVs out of cars, vans (vandwellers), or used passenger and school buses. Elkhart, Indiana, is known as the "RV Capital of the World" because it is home to many RV manufacturers, including, Forest River, Heartland RV, the Damon Corporation, Four Winds, Hy-Line, Keystone, Monaco, Sun Valley, and Travel Supreme. Many other manufacturers, including Dutchman, Gulf Stream, and Jayco, can be found in the nearby towns of Goshen, Middlebury, Nappanee, and Wakarusa. In 2005, these locales experienced a boom because of the large number of trailers ordered to house Hurricane Katrina victims. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
