Email Print RSS How to Rent a Recreational Vehicle By Harry Basch & Shirley Slater May 5, 2004 May 2004 -- For a first-time RV traveler, renting a unit of the same type you're thinking of buying can be an invaluable help in making up your mind. Just be sure to allow enough time -- a week is the minimum, 2 weeks is better -- to get comfortable with the day-to-day logistics of handling it on the road and hooking it up in the campground. Our own first RV experience was a 6-week lease on a 27-foot motor home because of a book assignment that required us to visit more than 100 remote ski areas. If we'd been renting it for only a few days, we'd probably have turned it back in and said RVing was not for us. When they heard about our plans, well-meaning friends regaled us with their experiences. A West Los Angeles bookstore owner took her family out for a month, but they used the RV only for travel and sleeping. "We never cooked a single meal inside," she said. "It seemed too complicated." A couple from San Diego had tried a rented motor home for 2 days, then, frustrated by slow road speeds, turned it back in and set out in their Mercedes 300 SL instead. But even that's a record compared to a short-tempered lawyer and his wife, who rented an RV for a weekend and gave it up less than an hour into the trip. Note that in none of these cases did the user give the vehicle the old college try. When to Rent Rather Than Buy When setting out on your very first RV journey. When considering replacing your current RV with a different type. When your family can only take a 2-week vacation once a year but wants to do it in an RV. That way you can test drive different models, and when you decide to buy, you'll have plenty of experience. When you want to travel several weeks far from home -- say, in a distant part of the United States -- or take a camping trip in Europe. Popular fly-and-drive packages are available from many companies. When you want to drive the Alaska Highway in one direction only and/or without subjecting your own vehicle to inescapable wear and tear. Simple Ways to Sample Campground Life With Accommodations Similar to RVs 1. Check into a Kamping Kabin or Kamping Kottage at a nearby Kampgrounds of America ( www.koa.com ) campground. Kamping Kabins, one- and two-room rustic log cabins with porches and double beds plus bunk beds, can sleep four for $20 to $30 a night. Kamping Kottages offer a kitchenette, dining area, bathroom with shower, and sleeping quarters for four, with porch swing and sometimes fireplaces and air conditioners. It's a good introduction to camping, especially for families with kids. The fee includes use of the campground's toilet and shower facilities, pool, playground, laundry, and store. The Kabins do not have bathrooms, but an outdoor grill and picnic table are provided. You need to bring your own bedding, lantern, and cooking utensils. Get a full list of locations from KOA, free at any KOA campground or by sending $4 to KOA Directory, P.O. Box 30558, Billings, MT 59114. You can call its administration offices at 406/248-7444 . 2. Call around to the campgrounds in your area or the area you'd like to visit and ask if they have any rental RV units. Sometimes a popular area may offer RVs already in place and hooked up and available for rent by the night. Outdoor World has a network of 15 campgrounds on the East Coast from Maine to Florida that offers RV rental units where you can sample RV living without owning. Book the family into Fort Wilderness at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Lodging is in Fleetwood park trailers with full kitchens and bathrooms, similar to travel trailers but set in place for a season or longer. Although you won't be able to road test the vehicle, you can determine how well your family fits into an RV. The cost-with air-conditioning, pool privileges, cable TV, cookware, and housekeeping services-is around $269 a night for a party of six with two adults. It's a good idea to reserve well ahead. For reservations call 407/934-7639 or 407/WDW-CAMP or log-on to www.disney.com ). Where & How to Rent Reserve a rental RV at least a month in advance, 3 months during peak vacation time. If planning to rent in Alaska, reserve 6 to 12 months ahead. A great many rental RVs are booked by European and Australian visitors to the United States who want to be able to see our national parks or drive along the coast of California. The most common unit available for rental is the motor home, either the larger type A or the type C mini-motor home, which accounts for 90% of all rentals. Prices begin at around $875 a week. Use of the generator is not usually included in the fee. You would need it only for operating the ceiling air-conditioning, microwave, and TV in a place without electrical hookups, and the dealer will know how much time you've logged by reading the generator counter, usually located by the on/off switch. When you find a company that rents travel trailers, you'll find they usually require that you furnish your own tow vehicle, hitch, and electrical hookups on the tow vehicle. Some companies offer a furnishings package with bedding, towels, dishes, cooking pots, and utensils for a flat price of around $85 per trip. Other add-on kits are those containing power cords and hoses, plastic trash bags, toilet chemicals, and a troubleshooting guide. Be sure you're provided with a full set of instruction booklets and emergency phone numbers in case of a breakdown. Best of all is to have a 24-hour emergency 800 number in case of a problem. When in doubt, ask a fellow RVer what to do. They're always glad to help, but sometimes hesitant to offer for fear of offending. No matter how much you bustle around like you know what you're doing, the veterans in the campground can spot a goof-up a mile away. Before setting out, be sure the dealer demonstrates all the components and systems of your unit. Take careful notes, and, just as with rental cars, check for dents and damage from prior use before leaving the lot. Get a detailed list of what furnishings are included in your rental so you'll know what necessary items you have to supply. It may be easier to bring things from home than spend vacation time searching for them on the road. How to Locate RV Rental Companies www.rvra.org ). You'll find a directory that lists addresses, phone numbers, and prices for European, Canadian, and U.S. companies listed by city and state or province. Cruise America, the largest rental company with more than 100 outlets, has added budget items such as camping vans, fully equipped travel trailers, and fold-out truck campers with compact pickups to tow them, to answer the requests from European campers in America, who are responsible for one-half to two-thirds of the company's rentals. Rentals will range from $875 to $1,895 a week (tel. 800/327-7799; www.cruiseamerica.com . Adventures Rental in Ontario, California, claims to have the largest trailer rental department in the United States, offering folding camping trailers from $350 a week and travel trailers from $575 a week. No rentals are made to anyone under 25. Renters supply tow vehicle, hitch and electrical connections, bedding, and utensils. A cleaning deposit is required and forfeited if the vehicle is not returned clean; the company has its own dump stations for holding tanks. Call them at 909/983-2567 for details. Altman's Winnebago in Carson, California (tel. 800/400-0787 or 310/518-6182; www.altmans.com ), has type A and type C new motor homes for rent. A typical rental charge for a small type C motor home would be around $692 to $1,158 a week. Rental of a type A motor home would run around $1,350 a week. Additional charges would be $15 a day insurance, $6 a day generator fee, and optional charges for kitchen kit (pots, dishes, glasses, $42 per trip) and bedroom kit (bedding and towels, $59 a person per trip). Your local yellow pages should also carry a listing for rentals under "Recreation Vehicle-Rentals." Many rental companies offer free airport pickup and return, if you notify them ahead of time of your flight number and estimated arrival time. Finally, if you fall in love with your rental vehicle (as we did our first one), you might be able to negotiate a purchase price that would subtract your rental fee from the total. If the vehicle is a couple of years old, the price should be even lower, since most dealers get rid of vehicles after 2 or 3 years. Insider Tips -- Normally, insurance on a rental RV is not covered on your personal automobile insurance, so ask your agent for a binder that extends your coverage to the RV for the full rental period. Many dealers require the binder before renting you a vehicle. Read your instruction sheets and checklists through at least once before setting out, then daily before hooking up and unhooking until you know the whole routine. Otherwise, you may -- as we did that first time -- drive miles out of your way to an RV dealer to find out why your generator doesn't work, only to learn it never works when your gas level drops below one-quarter of a tank. Establish exactly what the lowest-priced rental will include, such as free miles, amenities like dishes and linens, and breakdown service. Try to plan your trip for shoulder season or off-season. This may vary seasonally, depending on the rental area. Check in advance to see if your own automobile insurance agent will cover your rental insurance. He can usually do it more cheaply than the rental company. Try to plan a loop trip from the area where the rental unit is based to avoid drop-off charges. On long, major journeys such as Alaska or Baja California, you might want to pay the drop-off charge and fly back rather than repeat the arduous drive back to the beginning. Negotiate based on selection. The more units a company has, the wider your choice, but if you're flexible about what sort of rig you rent, you may be able to negotiate a better price if the selection is limited. When you think of Mississippi, what comes to mind? Illiteracy? Sweltering heat? Bigotry? Velvet Elvis? These are all valid responses. However, we must remember what Mississippi gives to the world of architecture. The mobile home is an icon in every Mississippi town with as much symbolism as the second place trophy (Civil War memorial) adorning every Mississippi town square. As with African Americans and gay people, labels for mobile homes have changed over the years. Manufacturers are trying to evade negative connotations. First it was a "trailer", then a "mobile home", and now the preferred nomenclature is "manufactured housing". We predict the next moniker will be "candominiums". Covering all the notable mobile homes of Mississippi would be as tremendous an undertaking as putting a man on the moon. For that reason, we've decided to concentrate on the great mobile homes of Columbus, Mississippi. Please join our tour. But watch out; some unscrupulous dealers have started placing undamaged homes on their "scratch and dent lot." If you are looking for a "customized home" the old "caveat emptor" (let the buyer beware) applies. Make sure the dealer discloses what customizing has actually been done! You might not realize it, but days of research go into creating appealing mobile home designs. In this example, the designers conducted market research by observing the grocery purchases of the target market. It was determined that 99.9% of that demographic preferred sliced white bread loaf-style, and as a result of that keen insight, this tasteful design proved irresistable. This home has a grand entrance, but you can see the owner isn't really concerned about the "mood" created by the home and its landscape. It's an older model home which has been kept way too clean. What gives? The lawn has been mowed and the garbage has been set out! This home requires a lot of work if they ever want it to be a "Great Mobile Home!" Perhaps, when the owner is finished discussing the pros and cons of WCW vs. WWF, he'll have time to devote to his home. This is a good start. A little rust is evident around the edges, corrugated aluminum is set against the skirting and some trash is piled around the well-weathered porch. This home is well on its way to becoming a redneck castle, but would never qualify for a FEMA loan. Now, look what adding some dogs, a chicken and a Trans-Camaro can do for a mobile home! No, the car isn't up on blocks (yet) but it still adds that extra touch that only the Trans-Camaro can. The film classic "Smokey and the Bandit" lives on in the heart of every mobile home dweller. Other notable features of this home include the custom-built air conditioner support and the fine use of windows. Adding too many windows to a mobile home makes them far too bright on the inside, fading the rugs and uphostery. A screened porch is a must in the South. Here you can see a screened porch put to good use as a storage area for a stove, refrigerator and other appliances. Although not as trendy as placing appliances in the yard, a screened porch allows the public to view your collection. However, it does make it more difficult to get the coveted "rust" color on the appliances. Also note the truck and Trans-Camaro in the yard; a definite plus! In this part of Mississippi, it's hard to keep the yard properly decorated. Many cruel people believe that only a sub-human family could occupy an old broken down bread truck like this one from Lauderdale County, Mississippi. However the artwork on the side is anthropological proof of modern homo sapiens. This energetic and artistic family quickly grew wealthy enough to purchase a stick home through video filmmaking and internet opportunities. Here we see the back-to-nature, save our ecology sentiments so native to trailer residents, proudly fluttering in the front yard. Or, has the payment on the electric bill been a little slow? We all must prioritize, and everyone knows that owning a working dryer isn't nearly as important as that giant satellite dish out back. Kids can be a great inspiration! Their toys add a colorful touch to the landscape and only a child can place objects with a randomness so necessary in making the yard not look "staged." Of course, a fishin' boat doesn't hurt, either! Is it a home, or is it a boat? The jaunty nautical theme suggests a whimsical "BoaterHome". Cars sensibly parked around the Boaterhome will function as little lifeboats, should disaster occur. In this outstanding example note the four cars are on blocks are camoflaged with weeds. In fact the rusted car to the right is covered with so many weeds it's difficult to spot. The resulting effect is subtle yet pleasing to the eye and keeps the neighbors from getting too jealous. This is a textbook example working within an architectural theme, yet keeping things sedated. An uneven lot can be turned into an asset with only a few cement blocks. Notice the strategic placement of blocks holding up the back end of this fine example of "trailer bending." Placing more blocks in the center of the home would destroy its gentle curve and completely spoil the striking effect. Trailer bending is also practical; spills flow to the lowest point in the trailer. This not only saves clean-up time but also makes it easy to feed the dogs. As a side note, the beer can and cigarette carton yard ornaments add colorful garden whimsy. Here's a family taking full advantage of a sloped lot. Other kids are jealous, because these children can sit on pie pans and slide down the hallway. Latinos have arrived in Columbus! All the neighbors said they couldn't concentrate on their TV sets after Pedro finished painting his trailer, so they moved away. The South is famous for gracious hospitality, and no place lays this claim on thicker than Mississippi. Clearly this tradition is not limited to the plantation house. "y'all come on down! We got a cot fer ya! Our pool blew away, but Mom 'n them still have one." Tornadoes cause hundreds of dollars of damage to mobile homes every year and some trailer dwellers take measures against them. Others just let nature help them with their decorating. Here we see an example of using tires to help hold the roof on during those frequent Mississippi storms. With the roof protected against even the most severe twister the owner can put more emphasis on landscaping. Insecurity often leads mobile homeowners to purchase mean dogs such as a Pit Bull or Rottweiler, known in these parts as 'Rocks'. Sadly, this family's Rock mistook their home for a can of Alpo. On the streets of New York, this car would draw laughter, but in Mississippi, this Transcamero 4x4 is a sex machine, capable of out boggin' any foreign-made yuppie SUV. For those who don't know, boggin' is a fascinating sport where contestants see who can get the furthest in a field of slick mud. Mississippi trailer folk don't get mad, they get even! Provoke a feud with your neighbor, and you might return from work one day to find no pad on your pad! Yard ornaments are especially appealing when they add color to the composition. But there are so many colors, how does one choose? These mobile home residents knew the beautiful shades of the '70s would come back in style and they bided their time. Now, they have gorgeous burnt-orange and avocado antiques to add that special touch to their landscape. In the American dream, people work hard and prosper. Here the owners (previously living in a mobile home) achieved the upward mobility of a stick-built home but never abandoned their traditional landscaping values. Here's a superb example of 12-pack engineering. A mobile wood burning, forced air heating and air conditioning unit . Note the extension ladder supporting the ductwork. We all know the rule: "If the van is a-rockin', don't come a-knocking", but the more appropriate conclusion here is: "If the van is a-smokin', don't come a-stoking". Why does the county insist on placing signs in front of homes with "slow" children? Is it really a good idea to advertise such facts? How does one enter this home? That's the beauty! As you can clearly see by this example, enough landscaping material can hide the front door from those pesky neighbors. Moving that much landscaping material into a yard takes a lot of work but if you plan it in stages it'll go smoother. Mississippi has a well-deserved reputation for beautiful women. Women who dress nice for football games, have lovely nails and hair, and who can't resist a man in a muscle car from the 70's. We heard this guy, with his homemade Buick Rivera Batmobile, gets more action than a toilet seat. A fine example of the art of architectural additions. Note how the style of the original home is tastefully mirrored in the choice of the mobile home addition. If the sign out front is any indication, you would be welcome to move in, should you stop by and feel the sudden urge to "git Saved". And surely, such an attractive option is why the addition was needed. Here's a conundrum. Do all Southern Baptists live in mobile homes, or are all mobile home dwellers Southern Baptists? Above is the parsonage for the "DOUBLE PORTION CHURCH COLUMBUS MS; ELDER OLDEN JONES PASTOR" (and bus driver). Does this mean you have to bring TWO 'covered dishes' every Sunday? Since the Baptists defrocked all their female pastors, Ms. Eldon Olden Jones was forced to change her affiliation. For Baptists, it's "Good Faith, not Good Works" that is guaranteed to open those Pearly Gates. Hence, they know that the lawn edging around this little tree will install itself properly with sufficient prayer and faith in the Holy Ghost. This pastor can just pick up the underskirt and go wherever and whenever Jesus says. It's sure to go down in architectural history along with the great cathedrals of France. (no, the car is not planted) Because so few have experienced the joy of living in a Great Mobile Home, the 4 Seasons motel offers a fabulous opportunity. You can meet others who share your passion in the free communal jaccuzi. Social tip: Be sure you are up to date on Nascar. It's a sure-fire way to win friends. Sometimes, when in the presence of the work of a great artist, one gets tingly all over! Here the thoughtful placement of 'found objects' such as matched grocery carts, yard appliances and an exercise machine evokes that majestic sensation. Vandals and thieves take heed! There are five dogs chained up in strategic places, along with 25 cats who amazingly, all looked exactly alike! The camera couldn't capture the love of animals that permeated the atmosphere. Truly, this home has earned the title, a Great Mobile Home of Mississippi. As an example, I purchased an HP printer/copier/scanner/fax machine this Sunday, tried to install but found out it doesn't come w/ a USB cable - a major component in connecting this to the computer. I had to buy this separately on Monday. Cost me more money. Think of the car dealerships that advertise their loss leader only to find out that they "sold" that one but will gladly sell you something close that's much more expensive (hence more profit). Let me be very clear, however, that the people at Excel Credit are fantastic - very curteous, professional, and consciencious. That was 2 weeks ago and interest rates have since climbed about 0.5%. The loan was w/ 10% down payment(including tax and registration in the loan amount). They were great. Prime today is 4.00. Fixed was 5.25 I opted for the lower fixed rate first 3 yrs, then variable because we know we will be selling this coach in 4 to 6 years. I purchased a 1997 Foretravel. I also had approval for a 1990 Bluebird. The Bird would have cost an additional 1/4% on the interest rate, as it was over eight years old.
