They are suited to all walks of life--from the simplest, most compact models to family-friendly ones as well as those accustomed to luxury on the road. Figure A Class A The Class A motor home combines the driving cabin and living area for a luxurious ride. A good example of one is the Gulfstream Friendship Quattro (figure A) , which is not only elegant and luxurious, but it is also the first four-slideout Class A coach. The additional two slideouts allow for a spacious bedroom, including a queen-size bed, a second television and a convenient workstation with Internet hookup. Figure B Another Class A, the Airstream Skydeck, is the world's first RV with a patio built onto the roof (figure B) . Sportsmen's Paradise This next class is designed for weekend getaways and/or off-road adventures. One example is the Chinook Baja, a slick and sophisticated 4 X 4 Class C RV that comes with cherry wood-finished cabinets, double-door refrigerator and GPS (global positioning system) navigational system. The Lance Camper 1161 features a slideout with several floor plans, including a new side entry that allows entrance or exit of the vehicle from an established camping area. The Lance's dinette allows for additional seating and easily converts into a large bed that sleeps two. For those of you who want to bring along your sporting vehicles, there's the Blaze 'N' Ramp Trailer that is designed specifically for carrying them right on board. Figure C Figure D Family Affair This set of RVs can be suited to family travel. The Jayco Eagle tent trailer (figure C) is often the first step a family might take when embarking on the RV lifestyle. It blends a roughing-it type of camping vacation with all of the conveniences of home. For those families who want a little more than the basics, there's the Carriage Carri-Lite 5th Wheel. If offers all the space of a class A, but needs a tow vehicle. The slideout adds an additional 30 to 40 square feet of space (figure D) . Simple Living on Wheels As more people try life on the road, manufacturers have come up with options to match every budget. So, if you're looking to economize without giving up comfort and convenience, then these compact and easy-to-manage RVs are for you. Figure E Figure E--The Chalet camping trailer is one of the smallest tow trailers on the market and can be assembled in 30 seconds or less. Particularly popular with first-time tent campers that want a little more luxury than sleeping on the ground, it comes equipped with an outside shower, and a trailer sleeps four--the couch folds into a full-size bed that sleeps two people, and the dinette folds into another bed that sleeps two more. Figures F and G--The Coachmen Chapparal Fifth Wheel is a great vehicle for the family that is looking to trade up to a larger class of RV. Completely revolutionizing RV design, it features for the first time, bunk beds as well as a large queen-size bed and spacious sleeping arrangements in the convertible furniture. There's also a galley kitchen with a double sink, stove, microwave and double-door refrigerator. It sleeps eight. Figure F Figure G Figure H Figure I Full-Time RVs As the name suggests, these mid-priced luxury motor homes are suited for those who like to live on the road full time--from the Georgie Boy Cruisemaster (figure H) , which boasts a galley kitchen, dinette and computer workstation, to the Western Alpine Coach Class A (figure I) , a 38-foot, front-door triple slideout that features a spacious living room, full residential refrigerator, garden shower and double slideout bedroom. It's even got a 37-inch plasma TV in the center of the floor plan! Large and in Charge Last up on our pictorial tour are some of the most luxurious RVs on the market for 2003. Figure J Figure K Figure J--Each Foretravel Unicoach has a custom-designed interior, retractable awning for shady outdoor dining, elegant fabrics on the furniture, 20-inch flat-screen television and a queen-size bed in the master bedroom. As an added bonus, the graphics on the exterior can be easily matched with the owner's car or boat. Figure K--The Country Coach Lexa luxury motor coach features a high-tech dashboard with massaging driver's seat and GPS navigational system. Inside the coach are ultra-suede furnishings, residential refrigerator and lighting and even heated tile flooring. This top-of-the-line 45-foot motor coach even has a home-theater system (pictured) with surround-sound speakers and a 42-inch plasma television that conveniently disappears when not in use. His well-informed viewpoints on the state of the RV industry and reasons for its success have appeared on television and radio and in newspapers and magazines from coast to coast. As chairman of the board of the American Recreation Coalition, a federation of more than 100 recreation-related companies and associations, Mr. Humphreys also carries notable credentials as a spokesperson on travel industry issues. In recognition of his outstanding efforts in sustaining and enhancing America's outdoor legacy, he was honored with the Sheldon Coleman Great Outdoors Award. Previous recipients include Former President George Bush, National Geographic Society President Gilbert Grosvenor and Former Secretary of Transportation Rodney Slater. RV Historian David Woodworth Displaying any one of his more than two dozen fully restored antique RVs along with a state-of-the art modern counterpart, David Woodworth brings RV history to life. As the world's foremost RV historian, Woodworth traces the remarkable evolution of RV travel from its earliest roots nearly a century ago to the RV phenomenon of today. "RVing has been so popular for so long because it fills one of the most basic human needs freedom," says Woodworth. "RVing began in the early 1900s because people wanted more travel options than the rail lines offered at the time. Today, people still want choices the ability to go wherever they want, when they want. An RV enables you to do that because your lodgings travel with you." Brad and Amy Herzog Meet Brad and Amy Herzog, an enthusiastic Generation X couple, and their photogenic toddlers Luke and Jesse. They represent today's newest generation of RV enthusiasts who enjoy the many conveniences and comforts RVs provide to families traveling with young children. Brad is an author who finds inspiration for his writing on the road. He chronicled his RV travel experiences in States of Mind, which soared to No. 2 on Amazon.com's best-seller list following his appearance on ABC-TV's Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. His latest book, Small World , tells the tales of small hamlets with grandiose names such as Rome, Oregon, Moscow, Maine and Cairo, Illinois. "Every small town has wonderful, fascinating and profound stories just waiting to be told," the couple says. "An RV, with its child-friendly features and overall affordability, is the best way to see America up close and find those stories." Acclaimed Mystery Writer Sue Henry Acclaimed mystery author Sue Henry loves talking and writing about RV travel. Henry, who hails from Alaska, has won several prestigious literary awards, and her first book, Murder on the Iditarod Trail , sold over a million copies and was made into a TV movie. Her latest work, Serpent's Trail , features RV adventurer Maxie McNabb, who travels in her motorhome to Colorado to solve a mystery. "I love being able to travel and still be at home," says Henry. "You can relax, or work, in an RV because it's your own space. It's also a great way to meet a lot of interesting peopleespecially fellow RVers. Some of them have gone into my books, though they'd never recognize themselves." Cinematographer John Holod As an award-winning cinematographer, John Holod spends most of his life on the road, either traveling the world to film a new documentary or presenting travelogues to audiences around the country. Holod travels the way he likes bestin a state-of-the-art motorhome, and he'll explain why. It's not only his home, but also his studio where he edits and produces all of his films. Holod's RV travel documentaries include "Alaska RV Adventures: The Last Great Road Trip," which describes his 1,500-mile RV adventure along the Alaska Highway, and his newest film, "Baja RV Adventure," set in Mexico. His presentations take audiences on breathtaking rides to the most popular RV destinations, with unforgettable images of the scenery and people that make these journeys unique. Authors Marilyn Abraham and Sandy MacGregor After 52 combined years in the corporate fast lane, this husband-and-wife team quit the rat race, purchased a motorhome and took a four-month journey to Alaska that changed their lives. They'll tell you how RVing has simplified their lives and millions of others. "We saw an RV trip as something we could do to take control of our lives. It was the best of all worlds we had complete freedom to come and go, eat and sleep when and where we wanted, the snack bar was always open and we got to sleep in our own bed. It also allowed us to visit remote areas where no tourist facility existed," says MacGregor. With their own RV travels serving as a catalyst, Abraham authored First We Quit Our Jobs: How One Work Driven Couple Got on the Road to a New Life and The Happy Camper Cookbook . Travel Expert and World-Class RVer Harry Basch For more than 20 years, travel writer Harry Basch has traveled the world in search of the best vacation destinations. But after visiting over 150 countries and taking more than 175 cruises, he'll tell you that RVing is the best way to vacation. "One of the benefits of being a travel writer is I can arrange to go to the most exotic and trendiest destinations in the world for free," says Basch. "But when it's time to take a vacation, I hit the road in my motorhome." Affordability, convenience, flexibility and freedom are just a few reasons why Basch finds RVing so appealing. His enthusiasm for RVing and travel expertise is reflected in Frommer's Exploring America by RV , a 430-page exploration of the United States by RV that he co-authored with his late wife and RV co-pilot Shirley Slater. Box 2999 Reston, Virginia 20195-0999 Used RVThe Most Complete RV Resource Recreational Vehicle Recreational Vehicle (or RV) is a term used in North America to describe a large enclosed piece of equipment with wheels designed to be moved from place to place for people to temporarily live in and be protected from the elements while away from their permanent home. While RVs are intended for brief leisure activities such as vacations and camping, some people, especially retirees, live in their units and are known as fulltimers. RVs can be rented in major U.S. and Canadian cities. There are different classes of vehicles generally labelled as RVs: A truck camperTruck Camper - unit is affixed to the bed or chassis of a pickup truck. Folding Camping Trailer - also known as a pop-up trailer; a light-weight unit with sides that collapse for towing and storage Travel Trailer - heavier unit with rigid sides designed to be towed by most vehicles by means of a bumper or frame hitch Fifth Wheel Travel Trailer - designed to be towed by a pickup truck equipped with a special hitch in the truck bed Park Model - designed for occasional relocation and will require a special tow vehicle and a highway movement permit Motorhome ("Winnebago", a product of the Winnebago Company that dominated the market for many years, was long a synonym for a motorhome, but this usage has faded in recent years.) Class A Motorcoach - constructed on a specially designed motor vehicle chassis, typically resembling a bus Class B Campervan - built using a conventional van, to which a raised roof has been added Class C Mini-motorhome - built on an automotive manufactured chassis with an attached van cab section Toterhome, a motor home built around a semi truck chassis such as a freightliner. This type of motor home allows you to pull large and heavy trailers while having all the conveniences of a large motor home A minimal RV typically contains beds, a table, food preparation and storage areas. Larger models add full bathrooms, refrigerators, living areas, master bedrooms, etc. Some RVs are very elaborate, with satellite TV and internet access, slide-out wall panels, and awnings; many RVs can cost in excess of $100,000 and some can cost over $1 million. These high end RVs typically need to be financed by banks or specialized lenders. Many RVers stay at RV parks, most of which feature electrical, water and sewer service (full hookups), as well as cable television and wireless Internet. Amenties often include swimming pools, gamerooms and even destination-resort activities such as horseback riding. Advantages of RVs include not having to move one's things in and out of motel rooms, not having to rent multiple motel rooms, and the fact that preparing food saves money compared to eating in restaurants. At the same time, an RV provides more organized living space and better protection from the weather than a tent. Children also tend to like RVs. Disadvantages of RVs include low fuel economy for the motorized RV or tow vehicle, lack of maid service as experienced in motels (maid service is available at a few high-end resorts), and larger RV models can be hard for the novice to drive or tow. Some people also live in RVs because they lack funds for more conventional housing. Similarly, RVs ? specifically, trailers which strongly resemble travel trailers, but usually with fewer amenities ? have been used to temporarily house victims of natural disasters. A notable example is Hurricane Katrina; the federal disaster relief agency FEMA has ordered large numbers of such trailers to house victims of the storm in Louisiana and Mississippi. Some people craft their own RVs out of cars, vans (vandwellers), or used passenger and school buses. Elkhart, Indiana, is known as the "RV Capital of the World" because it is home to many RV manufacturers, including, Forest River, Heartland RV, the Damon Corporation, Four Winds, Hy-Line, Keystone, Monaco, Sun Valley, and Travel Supreme. Many other manufacturers, including Dutchman, Gulf Stream, and Jayco, can be found in the nearby towns of Goshen, Middlebury, Nappanee, and Wakarusa. In 2005, these locales experienced a boom because of the large number of trailers ordered to house Hurricane Katrina victims. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. RV dealerships.
